Twins Cot Positions

Newborns

Cot-sharing for newborn twins is ideal for tandem settling. While many new parents worry one baby will wake the other one up, twins can sleep through each other’s crying really well. Not to say they will never wake up from it, but they can oftentimes sleep soundly by their twin.

This position is the easiest for tandem settling when tapping babies’ bottom.

Support their tummy with your hand (for single settling) or place a pillow in the middle for tandem settling.

Another great newborns cot-sharing position. If you have support at home for settling the twins, this position is easier for two people settling at the same time in the same cot.

Always roll the baby onto their back for sleep.

Young Babies

4-6 Months

Once babies are out of their swaddles and they begin to move more in the cot, it’s best to separate them.

Placing cots near one another will help when you need to tandem settle using tapping or patting.

Older Babies

6-9 Months

Placing cots close together in this way, or in an L shape, can help with tandem settling and supporting self-settling using an in the room method.

Older Babies

9-12 Months

Once twins begin to interact more with one another when they are in their cots, and especially once they can stand up, it’s best to space out the cots a bit.

This position discourages peek-a-boo games, passing and stealing toys/dummies.

Toddlers

12 Months Plus

Once twins begin to climb, it’s best to put them on opposite sides of the room, or at least ensure sufficient distance between the cots.

This position discourages the twins from climbing out of the cot. Also when possible keep cots away from windows and curtains, which will become a favourite game for the twins.
