It didn’t use to be this way
Traditional and tribal cultures used to embrace and nurture their newborn mothers. They will gather around her for weeks, taking care of mundane household chores, take care of the baby, take care of the older children, cook, clean, nurse to health, and ensure mother gets the rest she needs...
Sounds odd??? Well... it used to be the norm!
Our fast-pacing modernised, post-colonialism society has transformed the way newborn mothers need to raise their offspring. Yet, this seems normal now.
If it feels unrealistic, exhausting, overwhelming and hard- it's because it wasn’t meant to be this way. Postpartum period was meant to be a time of rest, healing, recovery and bonding with your baby.
In some cultures around the world this beautiful postpartum tradition is still taking place. although there is raising awareness around the benefits and importance of supporting newborn mothers in their postpartum, most are left to do it out on their own.
Postpartum support brings back these wonderful traditions, putting mother’s needs and desires in the centre and focuses on what makes her feel good. It holds space for her to slow down, take a break, eat well, enjoy her time with her baby, identify what she needs right now and make it happen.
It can be as simple as a walk in the fresh air, a long shower, a cooked meal, a cup of tea, changing her baby’s nappy so she can relax, listen to her feelings, give her a hug, and reassure her she is not alone in this.
