Belly Binding
Bind yourself with love
The history of belly biding is rich and long. Originating in ancient cultures, this practice was designed to support newborn mothers’ physical recovery after birth.
The wrap, traditionally applied with the help of nurturing elderly women, was “holding” in place the mothers’ internal organs to promote recovery, healing and offer support for her back.
When looking a bit closer into this act of care, it’s easy to notice the technical support (putting on the wrap), and the emotional support that comes with it. Another person (woman) is there by your side, helping, supporting, ensuring you are taken care of.
Mothers knew they can rely on the help of others to get this wrap of support around the most sensitive areas of their body. They were not expected to handle this on their own.
And rightly so. The traditional wrap was rather cumbersome to try and put on properly yourself, tying it in the back with just the right amount of pressure. And the women were there to help take it off when needed too.
This environment of support, of knowing you are surrounded with a network of love, care and nurturing, goes deep. It facilitates a peace of mind, relaxation, and allows a newborn mother to rest. Mentally, and physically.
Using belly biding can start from pregnancy, and last for as long as you want. Some women still use it long after their baby caring years.
The benefits of belly binding aren’t solely physical, for organs and back support. While some might believe they promote weight lose (which they don’t), they do have a secret, more subtle yet very potent quality. The pressure applied to a newborn mother’s body promotes the production of Oxytocin. The love hormone.
Some describe the feeling of belly binding as being held. Like receiving a permanent hug throughout the day. What a wonderful image!
For most newborn mothers who do not have a support network at home, this provides significant help. the production of Oxytocin helps mothers calm down, relax, feel grounded and go through the journey of new motherhood with physical-emotional, support.
The designs of belly binders have come a long way since their traditional look. They can be found in a variety of styles, sizes and materials.
I find the design of the Tubigrip most practical and comfortable. It is like a giant elastic tube which you put on like a skirt. It’s easy to put on and take off on your own, and wash when needed.
The lack of stitches, velcro and edges prevents from anything poking at your ribs and hip bones, and allows for maximum movement.
If you wish to get one, TLC Osteopathy Acupuncture has great Tubigrips for your pregnancy and postpartum.
