Why 6 Weeks?
Where does the notion of postpartum lasting 6 weeks come from? It seems to be found in many traditional cultures, including Chinese, Malayans, Greek, Indian, Judaism and African Tribes. Across all these diverse cultures there’s a repeating theme, in which newborn mothers are to be cared for and nurtured for a period of 5-6 weeks, or 40 days.
Isn’t that interesting?!
The research behind this wonderfully insightful old-as-time tradition suggests during this time the uterus contracts to its original size, milk supply regulates, maternal melatonin wears off in baby’s blood system, and physical wounds heal.
While all these happen during this short period of time, some things take longer, like emotional and hormonal fluctuations. So while the notion of 6 weeks has some merit to it, you might realise you need more time to settle into motherhood, and that is very understandable.
