Peace and Joy - The Oxytocin Combo
The production of Oxytocin, the love hormone, fluctuates throughout the day.
There are things that we can do to increase its production, and during postpartum this can have an incredible impact on your well-being.
The best way to describe the feeling we get when we release oxytocin is Peace and Joy.
Imagine biting into a piece of chocolate, receiving a hug, taking a hot bath, patting a pet…
Those activities tend to make us smile with a warm fuzzy sensation running through our body.
That’s oxytocin.
Breastfeeding is often associated with the release of oxytocin. Yet, when we actively increase the levels of oxytocin in the body, it helps increase milk supply. It’s a wonderful cycle!
During postpartum, there are many things that raise our anxiety and stress levels. And that is why it is so important to put plans and strategies in place to help boost the oxytocin levels throughout the day.
By allocating time for peace and joy, and it doesn’t need to be a very long time, you actively take care of your mental health and well-being.
Things that increase oxytocin:
Drinking a hot tea/coffee
Taking a short stroll to get some sunshine
Eating delicious food
Listening to music
Hugging a loved one
Taking a nap
Cuddling with your babies
All these can help boost your oxytocin levels, and make you feel peace and joy.
What does oxytocin do:
Increases milk supply
Increases tolerance for monotony and boredom
Increases the speed and sensitivity in reading facial expressions
Promotes wound healing
Increases bonding with your baby
Makes you a happy and healthy mum
Having a support person to help you take those necessary breaks can make a world of difference throughout your postpartum.
Some things can be more easily achieved now than later, and some things can be altered to suit your family’s dynamic and needs.
Yet prioritising your well-being and finding time for peace and joy aren’t luxuries, they are essential.
When your needs are met, and you feel relaxed and calm, your day-to-day will look much different.
You will find it easier o navigate trough daily challenges, and enjoy the time with you babies that much more.
