A Busy Household of Twins
How can twins sleep in a busy house?
Babies are born into our existing lives. We should, of course, make adjustments to accommodate their needs and requirements, yet we also want them to merge into the home they were born. This includes pets, siblings, and your way of living. If your older children are noisy during the baby’s nap, of course this is upsetting. It should be explained to them how important it is to be quiet at this time. And it’s great if you can keep them engaged in low-key activity for that time in the day. However, the baby isn’t alone in the house, and it’s ok to let them learn they have siblings who sometimes make noise, or a dog that barks at the postman. It’s the natural surroundings of their life, it’s their reality. I’ve met children who could only sleep in a noisy environment, because they had older siblings. Your first baby might be used to sleeping in a nice, quiet house. Your second might experience a totally different scenario.
Finding a sleep programme that works with your particular needs and circumstances is key for your babies to thrive, and for you to manage to balance everyone needs- including yours!
A sleep plan doesn’t have to be rigid and strict. Learning to work around your babies’ biological sleep windows and needs can be easier than you might imagine, and does not have to come at everyone’s expense.
What’s more, helping babies learn to self-settle can be of great value for a busy family like yours. Self-settling also helps with babies’ cat naps. If your babies currently struggle with cat naps, learn how to help them with my “Road Map to Eliminating Cat Naps”.
